SWOT analysis (1) Strength Korea is famous for the rapid economic development(새마을운동) during the 1970s. So developing countries in Asia want to be instructed on the rapid development know-hows; including constructing infrastructures. Korea has technological competitiveness in constructing power plants, nuclear power plants, and SOC(Social overhead capital) department, which are strongly attractive factors for developing countries. Therefore, if Korean companies try to provide financial service connected with solutions of development, it would be welcomed by Asian countries. Moreover, we have highly developed IT, which can be used in constructing financial systems. (2) Weakness Small scale is the weakness of Korean companies. Since Korean financial market is not that developed and regulations are tight, Korean security companies could not expand their scale. Because of the small scale, Koransecurity companies could not take advantage of the economies of scale and take part in deals of larger scale. For example, when Korea won a contract for UAE nuclear power plant project (40billion USD) last year, foreign IB took part in the project by designing the financial schedule and received the brokerage fee which amounted to hundreds of millions of dollars; here,Korean security companies could not participate because of the small scale and the lack of the financial expertise. We can see how small the Korean market is especially when we compare Korean securities companies with its US counterparts such as GoldmanSachs.
